Dr. Smith joined Monroe School District as superintendent in 2015 after serving as a Chief Academic Officer for the Puyallup schools. Dr. Smith started her career as a Special Education teacher in the Marysville School District and has served as an assistant superintendent, executive director, and assistant principal in Stanwood-Camano, Meridian and Mukilteo school districts.
She has been a leader in starting innovative programs to meet the ever-evolving needs of children and their learning. A UW Bothell alumni, she continues her work there in the Leadership Development for Educators program – a program she helped to develop.
Her career includes many leadership roles in educational programs including the Washington Association of School Administrators and University of Washington School of Education.
Dr. Smith earned her doctorate in Educational Leadership and Policy Studies in 2012 from the University of Washington – Seattle where she also earned her superintendent’s credential. Her Master’s degree was completed in 2001 at Western Washington University in the area of Exceptional Children. Dr. Smith was one of the first graduating classes from the University of Washington – Bothell completing her Bachelor of Arts degree in 1994 in Comparative U.S. Studies. She was presented with the Distinguished Alumni Award in 2016 for her extensive service to students and families, a true servant leader.
She has a longtime association with Snohomish County as a graduate of Lynnwood High School.
